WHAT WOULD AN ENGINEER MAYOR DO?
Let’s pretend I arrived home and my wife told me the house waste drain pipe was broken in the front courtyard.
Well I had three options. To be fair I knew at this time Mayor Mufi had diverted fifty one million (51,000,000) gallons of raw untreated sewerage into and onto the beach at Waikiki creating high levels of enterococci, an indicator that the water is contaminated with fecal coliform bacteria.
Option 1 AKA Mufi minor: Pump our sewerage into our neighbor’s swimming pool until I had the pipe repaired. Since we agreed my neighbor would not be pleased as he rented to tourists for more than 30 days. High levels of enterococci can cause skin irritation, vomiting or diarrhea in swimmers. Which could ruin anyone’s vacation!
Option 2 Mufi major: was to pipe our sewerage into Kailua Bay as it was only 1,000 ft. away. We considered the EPA fines and weekends in OCCC and our neighbors tar and feathering us so that option was also ruled out.
Option 3 CCK plan: Was to shut off the main water supply to the house and repair the pipe.
I took option 3.
